and we do say good friday morning to you, everyone. it is the only full day of the pope's stay here in new york city getting under way. >> his visit off to quite a start. francis taking part last night in an evening prayer service at st. patrick's cathedral. during his remarks he delivered a strong message of support for american nuns, calling them women of strength. >> well, before that service started, the pope stopped to greet and bless a young girl in a wheelchair. the 17-year-old later called the moment amazing. when the service was over the pope headed out back into that now famous fiat. he spent the night at the residence of the u.n.'s ambassador. >> a live look at new york's world trade center. pope francis will be there today as is abc's lana zak so say good morning, lana. >> reporter: good morning. you know, already the streets are closed down. police barricades a full 37

miles of them have been erected as new york prepares for the people's pope. from the seat of government to the financial capital of the world, pope francis is in new york. his arrival in the big apple met with exuberance, new york style. thousands waited hours on fifth avenue for just a glimpse of the pontiff. >> i love the city so i'm very proud that he had the opportunity to come here. >> this is amazing. it's amazing. he's truly the people's pope. >> reporter: even the stars were starstruck. "people" magazine instagraming the moment olivia pope saw the pope. >> oh, my god. this is so cool. >> reporter: amid all the joy and excitement there's also reflection and purpose. today the pope will address world leaders at the u.n., he's largely expected to bring a message of protection for the imporished, compassion for refugees and a concern for the environment a message not only heard but seen as he travels in his fiat. in new york his agenda is

bigger consequences. in seattle earlier this week xi tried to reassure american companies china would remain a good place for investment. later today xi and president obama are expected to announce a new cap and trade deal to reduce pollution and fund clean energy. but u.s. officials are also expected to bring up some things they don't agree on including china's cyberspying and territorial disputes in the asian pacific and, of course, no state visit would be complete without an exquisite dinner, on the menu for tonight, colorado lamb and fall vegetables from the white house garden. also today the first ladies of the two countries will visit the pandas at the national zoo and we are told that some type of announcement will be made there. bazi kanani, abc news. >> has it been 100 days? >> still ahead, new concerns about a popular form of birth

intersection, the saudi king is promising a speedy investigation into the tragedy. top lawmakers on capitol hill are working behind the scenes to avert a government shutdown. yesterday the senate failed to pass a bill which would have stripped planned parenthood of its taxpayer funding while keeping the government running through december 11th. federal reserve chief janet yellen says record low interest rates will likely begin increasing by the end of the year. last night in massachusetts she predicted inflation will gradually move up to the fed's target rate of 2%. no reaction yet from the u.s. stock markets all opening this morning down a few points. well, the race for the white house, bernie sanders has opened up a wide lead over hillary clinton in new hampshire. a new poll shows sanders with support from % of voters. clinton with 30% and joe biden with 14%. biden still has not announced whether he will run. okay, well, when we come back, too close for comfort, a hunter's big surprise, the

airport delays in miami and atlanta. we move now back to the news and that deadly crash in seattle involving tourists. >> police are looking into reports that a mechanical problem caused the amphibious tour vehicle to lose control. it slammed into a bus carrying international students on the tour of the city. four young people believed to be from china were killed. the passenger described what happened. >> we were coming around the curb and he was pointing out the harbor and next thing i know, i think maybe the traffic slowed down and we veered out of control and then we hit this bus here and just spun it around and people were being thrown out of the duck and things like that. >> the driver who came upon the accident immediately afterwards described the scene of horror. in san antonio, texas, the assistant coach accused of ordering two high school football players to tackle a referee has now resigned. mack breed's attorney haste his comments were regrettable but denied explicitly telling the teens to hit the ref. he claims he was angry after the
